‘Tis the Season: Keeping the Holidays Healthy

I hope everyone had a happy Thanksgiving!  Now that Thanksgiving Day has come and gone, Christmas season is in full swing!  This time of year is all about spending time with friends and family and enjoying every minute of holiday festivities.  Holiday parties are filled with joyful decorations and delicious Christmas-inspired food.  Is there anyone that doesn’t look forward to holiday parties??

Although the holiday season is supposed to be all about joy and happiness, it can also be overwhelming and stressful.  Decorating, shopping, attending parties and keeping up with everyday routines can be really hard!  Healthy eating and workouts are often times the easiest things to put on the back burner during the holidays.  It can be all too easy to say “I will just get back on track after the first of the year” and carry on with holiday festivities without thinking twice about health.  It’s always easier to STAY on track than to get back on track later.  So, I decided to make a plan and set some goals to stay healthy during this crazy time of year.  Here are a few tips with my specific goals:

  1. Schedule workouts into your weekly schedule.  I mentioned this tip in a previous post…and I think it really helps!  My goal is to workout 6 days/week giving me one day to skip a workout for a party or holiday function.  Scheduling workouts first thing in the morning will limit the number of excuses that come up after work or later in the day.
  2. Eat regular meals with snacks every day!  It doesn’t help to skip meals in order to save up for a big binge at a party.  It’s actually worse on your body.  So, eat your regular meals and allow yourself to indulge a little at parties.  My goal for this is to eat a regular dinner before going to cocktail/appetizer parties to limit my snacking on unhealthy options.  If I’m full before the party, I will only snack on the things that I truly can’t pass up…most likely any kind of homemade dip 🙂
  3. Find a friend that wants to stay on track too.  It’s hard to be the only one in your social circle that is trying to stay on track during the holidays.  Finding a friend with similar goals will help you stay motivated and accountable.  My friend Jordan and I are going to help each other by weighing in each week to make sure we are keeping ourselves in check.  It’s not all about weight, but it’s a useful tool to keep track of progress or maintenance.
  4. Share healthier food options.  Being a dietitian, I am well-known for bringing treats to parites that are “healthified”.  There are so many recipes out there that make small tweaks to favorite foods to make them more nutritious.  If you bring a healthy treat to parties, you will ensure that there is always a healthy option.  During this season, I will continue bringing healthy, delicious foods to holiday parties.
  5. Relax and make time for yourself…including enough sleep!  It is a crazy, hectic time of year.  Don’t forget to make some “me” time to relax and regroup.  Try to get plenty of sleep each night.  When we skip out on sleep, our bodies go into panic mode.  This can cause illness and a complete lack of energy.  And, let’s be honest, this time of year is NOT the time to be sick!  My goal is 8 hours/night.  I am not a happy camper if I don’t get adequate beauty rest 🙂

My final tip is to enjoy everything about the holiday season!  Drink apple cider, sing ridiculous Christmas songs, wear footie pajamas, make Christmas cookies, watch the Elf ten times/day, ….whatever fills you with Christmas cheer.  Hopefully these tips will help you stay on track without stressing yourself out.  Any other tips to share??

  1. Love your list of goals! I totally agree with #1 and #4 especially for making sure you feel your best, especially when holiday foods are in abundance. And, of course, #5 is so important 🙂
